Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications Signs Agreement for New HVTS Transport Systems

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) in cooperation with Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) announced today the signing of new Horizontal & Vertical Transport Systems for BIA’s New Terminal which includes lifts, travellators and escalators, the announcement came following a signing ceremony with KONE Corporation, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry during Bahrain International Airshow 2016 attended by His Excellency Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications as well as Mr Mohamed Yousif Albinfalah, the Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Airport Company, and (KONE Corp Representative).

As per the agreement, KONE Corporation, represented by Al Zayani Commercial Services Co. will design, manufacture and install 85 Lifts, 20 travellators and 40 escalators in the new terminal. This comes as part of a major airport overhaul in Bahrain dubbed as the Airport Modernization Program (AMP) which is set to elevate Bahrain International Airport’s (BIA) infrastructure and services. When completed, it is expected to increase the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers a year and revitalize much of the potential in the aviation industry in Bahrain and the northern gulf region.

Welcoming the signing, His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications said: “The Airport Modernization Program is the largest airport infrastructure project undertaken in over thirty years, and will be done in accordance with the highest standards of safety, security, technology and environment.  I am pleased to sign this BD 4,703,098 Million (US $12.463,210 Million) agreement with KONE Corporation for the proposed Transport Systems which should be in place by Q2 2020 to coincide with the opening of the second phase of the new passenger terminal building at Bahrain International Airport”.

Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Airport Company Mr. Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah also commented on the signing “Working in close partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in developing the Kingdom’s aviation capabilities, we look forward to this partnership with KONE Corporation to deliver a state of the art people moving solutions which should fulfill our vision to create an exceptional passenger experience. The new Horizontal & Vertical Transport Systems for BIA will enable passengers to move through the new Terminal with comfort and efficiently and will contribute to the high quality ‘look and feel’ of the new building .”.
