The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of January 2018, was warmer than normal in temperatures with below average precipitation, wind speed and relative humidy.

The mean temperature of the month was 18.4°C which is 1.4°C above the long-term normal.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 21.9°C which is 1.9°C above the long-term normal. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 26.0°C which occurred on the 6th and 26th of January at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 26.8°C on the 6th of January at Sitra Island.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 14.9°C which is 0.8°C above the long-term normal. During the month Bahrain had 14 days with minimum temperature below 15°C.

The lowest temperature recorded was 10.8°C set on the 13th of January at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 9.5°Cat same night in Durrat Al Bahrain. Note that the lowest temperature ever recorded in Bahrain for January was 2.7°C which occurred on 20th January 1964 at Bahrain International Airport. But reached lower than zero degrees Celsius at Sothern areas during that year.

The mean relative humidity for January was 61% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 80%. The mean minimum relative humidity was 39% and goes on record as the lowest mean monthly minimum relative humidity for January since 1946. The old record was 40% in January 2013.

Trace amount of precipitation were recorded on the 8th January at Bahrain International Airport where the long-term mean total precipitation for the month of January is 14.5 mm - the highest monthly rainfall ever recorded during January was 135.9 mm which occurred on January 1959.

January 2018 was the second sunniest January since the sunshine records began in 1968 whereby the monthly total hour of sunshine recorded was 278.2 hours. This is same as January 2001 and exceeded only by January 2015 with a record of 282.9 hours.

Westerly to Northwesterly winds accounted 61% with gusts reaching 31 knots on the 28th of January at Bahrain International Airport and on the 27th of January at King Fahd Causeway.

Fog affected the kingdom on the 1st of January reducing the visibility to 40 meters at Bahrain International Airport.

Also thick dust haze affected the Kingdom of Bahrain on the 20th of January reduced the visibility to 500 meters at Bahrain International Airport due to the movement of deep surface trough from the Northern Areas of Saudi Arabia towards the Arabian Gulf accompanied by fresh to strong Northwesterly winds.
