8th July 2014

As part of the Ministry of Transportation’s strategic objective aimed at developing public transportation and enhancing infrastructure and facilities within the sector, the Ministry signed an agreement with Trueform – a leading engineering company that offers a ’one-stop-shop’ for the supply supply, installation and maintenance of all forms of intelligent passenger transport hardware, transport information and communication technologies – who will be responsible for demolishing and installing bus shelters and stops and will be commencing work over the coming three months.

On this occasion, His Excellency Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed Minister of Transportation and Acting Chief Executive of the Economic Development Board stated that the agreement serves as a first step towards developing the Kingdom’s transportation infrastructure by providing modern and advanced facilities that will support public transportation services and will assist in setting a solid foundation for the Kingdom’s transportation network which will cover various locations.

His Excellency further added that one of the Ministry’s main goals is aimed at improving public transport facilities, and by commencing with the demolishing and installation of bus shelters and stops project, this will serve as a stepping-stone towards building the sector’s infrastructure so that it is fully equipped and prepared to accommodate the new bus operator which is expected to commence its operations in January 2015.

Moreover, the Ministry studied various projects to ensure citizens and residents are offered efficient and high quality transportation services and will be implementing the projects according to a scheduled plan that includes several short and long term plans in line with the Kingdom’s Economic Vision 2030.

In turn, Her Excellency Undersecretary for Land Transport and Post Affairs Engineer Mariam Ahmed Jumaan said that by signing this agreement, the Ministry will be installing approximately 600 bus shelters in various locations which will increase the transportation network coverage from 30% to75%, consequently achieving great strides in providing efficient and quality services to public transport users.

Her Excellency further added that by improving public transportation services, the Ministry aspires to reduce traffic congestion and reduce journey times. Moreover, utilizing public transport as a means for transportation will help in reducing the environmental impact from vehicle emissions and hence improving the quality of life.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Transportation is working in close coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic and the Ministry of Works to ensure that minimal traffic disturbances are experienced once the project commences. The project contractor will also be taking all the necessary safety and security precautions to ensure citizens and residents’ safety during the project’s implementation phase.
