MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –AUGUST 2019

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of August 2019 goes on record as the fifth hottest August ever experienced in Bahrain since 1902.

The mean temperature of the month was 35.9°C which is 1.9°C above the long-term normal for August and this goes on record as the fifth highest mean temperatures for the month of August since 1902. This is same as August 2012 and exceeded by August 2017 with a record of 36.6°C, August 1998 with a record of 36.5°C, August 2016 with a record of 36.4°C and August 2015 with a record of 36.1°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 40.4°C which is 2.4°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the seventh highest mean maximum temperatures for the month of August since 1946 and exceeded by August 2017 with a record of 41.4°C, August 2015 with a record of 41.2°C, August 2016 with a record of 41.1°C, August 1998 with a record of 41.0°C, August 2005 with a record of 40.8°C and August 2000 with a record of 40.7°C.

During the month Bahrain had 15 days with maximum temperature exceeding 40°C.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 45.4°C which occurred on the 31st August at Bahrain International Airport and this goes on as the fourth highest maximum temperature for the month of August since 1946 at Bahrain International Airport. This is same as 5th August 2002 and 10th August 2009 and exceeded by 9th August 1993 with a record of 45.7°C, 15th August 2016 with a record of 45.6°C, and 14th August 2005 with a record of 45.5°C.

The highest temperature recorded in the month of August at Bahrain International Circuit was 47.1°C on the 2nd August and at Durrat Al Bahrain was 46.3°C in the same day.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 32.8°C which is 2.3°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the fourth highest mean minimum temperatures for the month of August since 1946. This is same as August 2010 and exceeded by August 2017 with a record of 33.2°C, August 2016 with a record of 33.0°C and August 2015 with a record of 32.9°C.

The lowest temperature recorded was 31.3°C set on the 28th August at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 28.3°C on the 18th August at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for August was 52% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 69% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 28%.

August 2019 was the second sunniest August since the sunshine records began in 1968 whereby the monthly total hour of sunshine recorded was 358.4 hours. This is same as August 2016 and exceeded by August 2015 with a record of 359.9 hours.

The Northwesterly winds accounted 25% with gusts reaching 32 knots on the 8th August at Bahrain International Airport but reached 34 knots in the same day at Durrat Al Bahrain. Easterly winds accounted 20% of the observation.

Dust reported on the 8th August. Visibility dropped to 3000 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
