Tender Awarded During the Bahrain International Airshow 2016

State of the Art Baggage Handling System for New Passenger Terminal

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) in cooperation with Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) announced today the signing of a contract with a global leader in baggage handling systems, Vanderlande Industries BV.  

As per the agreement, Vanderlande Industries BV will design, manufacture and install a state of the art automated baggage sortation system capable of processing 4,700 bags per hour, an early bag store with capacity for at least 600 bags and 8 reclaim belts. This comes as part of a major airport overhaul in Bahrain dubbed as the Airport Modernization Program (AMP) which is set to elevate the Bahrain International Airport (BIA) infrastructure and services. When completed, it is expected to increase the airport’s capacity to 14 million passengers a year and revitalize much of the potential in the aviation industry in Bahrain and the northern gulf region.

The signing ceremony took place during Bahrain International Airshow 2016 and was attended by HE the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed and the Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Airport Company, Mr. Mohamed Yousif AlBinfalah, and Mr.Govert Hamers CEO of Vanderlande Industries BV.  

Welcoming the signing, His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Said” am pleased to announce the signing of this contract agreement with Vanderlande Industries BV at a contract value of BD 11,687,583(US$ 30,972,095) to inhance BIA’s operations and passenger experience. We expect the project to be completed by Q2 2019 to coincide with the opening of the first phase of the new passenger terminal building”. 

Bahrain Airport Company is the authority responsible for managing Bahrain International Airport and increase its contribution to the national economy in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.  In its’ operational role, the company is also the “client representative” for the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in developing and executing the Airport Modernization Program which is set to elevate the airport’s operations and infrastructure.  

Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Airport Company Mr. Mohamed Yousif Al- Binfalah also commented on the signing “Signing the baggage handling system (BHS) contract is a key milestone in realizing our plans for the AMP. Working in close partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in developing the Kingdom’s aviation capabilities, we look forward to work hand in hand with Vanderlande Industries BV to deliver a state of the art system which should fulfill our vision to create an exceptional passenger experience.
