MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –DECEMBER 2020

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of    December 2020 was warmer than normal in temperatures and below-average precipitation.

The mean temperature of the month was 21.0°C which is 1.8°C above the long-term normal for December and this goes on record as the seventh-highest mean monthly temperatures for December since 1902. Note that the highest mean temperatures recorded in Bahrain for December was 22.5°C occurred in December 2001.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 23.7°C which is 1.4°C above the long-term normal. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 27.7°C which occurred on the 2nd and 3rd December at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 29.3°C on the 2nd December at Bahrain International Circuit

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 18.7°C which is 2.5°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the fourth-highest mean minimum temperature for December since 1946. Note that the highest mean monthly minimum temperatures recorded in Bahrain for December was 19.6°C occurred in December 2001.

The lowest temperature recorded was 14.6°C set on the 26th December at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 12.5°C on the 27th December at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for December was 66% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 78% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 52%. The maximum relative humidity was 87% recorded on the 3rd, 5th, 19th and 31st December and the minimum relative humidity was 30% recorded on the 24th.

A total of 4.4 mm of precipitation was reported in December 2020 at Bahrain International Airport. Trace amounts were recorded on the 19th December. Note that the long-term mean total precipitation for December is 10.9 mm and the highest monthly rainfall ever recorded during December at Bahrain International Airport was 119.6 mm which occurred in 2006.

Heavy rain showers were reported at Bahrain International Airport on the 5th December accumulating daily total precipitation of 4.3 mm and the visibility dropped to 2000 meters.

The total monthly precipitation recorded for December 2020 at King Fahd Causeway was 0.8 mm whereas the total precipitation at Durrat Al Bahrain was 0.2 mm, Bahrain International Circuit and Sitra Island had no precipitation recorded.

The Mean wind speed for December was 9 knots. The prevailing wind was 41% from the Northwest direction. Gust winds reached 28 knots on the 26th December at Bahrain International Airport. But Gust winds reached 29 knots on the 7th December at King Fahad Causeway.

Dust reported on the 6th December. Visibility dropped to 2500 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
