MONTHLY WEATHER SUMMARY –JULY 2021

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of July 2021 goes on record as the second hottest July ever experienced in Bahrain since 1902.

The mean temperature of the month was 36.5°C which is 1.4°C above the long-term normal for July and this goes on record as the second highest mean temperature for July since 1902 and only exceeded by July 2017 and 2020 with a record of 36.9°C.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 41.1°C which is 1.4°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the fifth-highest mean maximum temperatures for July since 1946 and exceeded by July 2017 with a record of 42.1°C, July 2020 with a record of 41.8°C, July 2002 with a record of 41.4°C and July 2000 with a record of 41.3°C.

During the month Bahrain had 20 days with a maximum temperature exceeded 40°C. The highest temperature recorded during the month was 45.0°C which occurred on the 27th July at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the highest temperature recorded for July at Bahrain International Airport was 47.4°C which occurred on 15th July 2000 and 13th July 2010.

The highest temperature recorded in the month at Bahrain International Circuit was 48.6°C on the 28th July 2021 and at Durrat Al Bahrain was 47.8°C on the 2nd July 2021.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 33.1°C which is 1.7°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the third highest mean minimum temperature for July since 1946. This is the same as July 2019 and exceeded by July 2020 with a record of 33.6°C and July 2016 with a record of 33.2°C.

The lowest temperature recorded was 29.8°C set on the 5 and 6th July at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 26.7°C on the 7th July at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for July was 51% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 70% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 31%. The maximum relative humidity was 88% recorded on the 10th July and the minimum relative humidity was 11% recorded on the 30th July.      

July 2021 was the fourth sunniest July since the sunshine records began in 1968 whereby the monthly total hour of sunshine recorded was 368.7 hours and exceeded by July 1974 with a record of 377.8 hours, July 2014 with a record of 376.0 hours and July 2019 with a record of 370.6 hours.

Only trace amounts of precipitation were recorded on 17th July at the Bahrain International Airport. A thundery shower was reported at Durrat Al Bahrain on the 18th July which produced daily total precipitation of 0.4 mm.

This unsettled weather condition occurs in the summer due to the approach of tropical low-pressure formation lines on the southern regions of the Arabian Peninsula and the Arabian Sea, which caused unstable weather and thundery showers accompanied by strong gust wind over some areas.

The month was hot and humid. This was due to prevailing easterly winds which brought humid air to the kingdom from the Arabian Gulf.

The Mean wind speed for July was 8 knots. The prevailing wind was 29% from the East direction. Northwesterly winds accounted for 16% of the observation. Gust winds reached 30 knots on the 2nd and 29th July at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 31 knots on the 29th July at Durrat Al Bahrain

Haze was reported on the 6th July. Visibility dropped to 3000 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
