01 April 2026

The Kingdom of Bahrain took part virtual in the 237th session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council.

Husain Ahmed Al Shuail, Undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs, at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, affirmed Bahrain’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of international civil aviation safety and security, stressing the importance of adherence to international law in protecting civilian airspace.

In his remarks, Al Shuail described the recent Iranian attacks as unlawful acts that pose a serious threat to the safety of civil aviation and violate both the Chicago Convention and the United Nations Charter. He welcomed ICAO’s condemnation of these attacks, which targeted GCC states and Jordan using missiles and drones, noting that it reflects the global community’s awareness of the risks these acts present to aviation security.

He pointed out that these attacks created a highly dangerous operating environment, forcing affected countries to take precautionary measures, including closing airspace and rerouting flights, which disrupted international air traffic. Al Shuail emphasised that the Council’s resolution, including its call for an immediate halt to such attacks, represents a significant step in protecting civil aviation and reinforcing compliance with international law.

He highlighted that aviation safety and security are a shared responsibility, requiring strong international cooperation and decisive action to safeguard civilian airspace and ensure the continuity of air transport.

The resolution was based on a joint working paper submitted by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco. It strongly condemned attacks that endanger civil aviation, called for their immediate cessation, and referred the matter to the relevant United Nations bodies, while ensuring ongoing monitoring of the situation.

Al Shuail concluded by stressing that protecting civil aviation remains a collective responsibility, demanding coordinated international efforts and firm measures to preserve the safety, security, and smooth operation of global air transport.
