04 June 2026

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications organised the "Cyclethon" event to mark World Bicycle Day, observed annually on June 3, in cooperation with the Bahrain Cycling Association and the Al Haraka Baraka Movement.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, said the ministry continues to implement projects and initiatives to develop infrastructure that supports cycling. These efforts include expanding dedicated cycling lanes and enhancing their integration within new urban and housing developments, contributing to a safe and encouraging environment for bicycle use and promoting a culture of sustainable mobility in the Kingdom.

The minister highlighted the cycling track in Madinat Salman, which was completed efficiently and within a record timeframe, noting that it represents one of the Kingdom’s leading examples of modern infrastructure supporting sustainable mobility. He said the track was designed in accordance with international best practices in safety, sustainability and quality standards, ensuring a safe and integrated experience for all age groups while strengthening community connectivity and encouraging healthier and more sustainable lifestyles in line with Bahrain’s urban development objectives.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed added that World Bicycle Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the growing role of bicycles as a practical and healthy mode of transport and to encourage the adoption of more sustainable mobility patterns, supporting Bahrain’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Fatima Abdulla Al Dhaen, Undersecretary for Land Transport and Post at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, expressed pride in the success of the event and the strong level of participation. She noted that the transport sector is placing increasing emphasis on integrating active mobility into the Kingdom’s comprehensive transport system.

She also commended the efforts of government and private-sector partners, as well as civil society organisations, in supporting the ministry’s initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability principles.

The event featured a cycling tour along the dedicated cycling tracks in Madinat Salman, in addition to a range of awareness and interactive activities designed to promote sustainable mobility and encourage bicycle use.

The event forms part of a series of initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in partnership with relevant entities to support Bahrain’s efforts in environmental sustainability, carbon neutrality and the advancement of sustainable development goals indicators.
