05 November 2026

Bader Hood Al Mahmood, Undersecretary of Ports and Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, headed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s delegation participating in the 138th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, held at the organisation’s headquarters in London, United Kingdom, with the participation of representatives of IMO member states.

The Council discussed issues related to the organisation’s work and the future of international maritime transport, including strategic plans, compliance with international maritime conventions and standards, maritime safety, environmental protection, and the sustainability of the shipping sector.

On the sidelines of the session, Al Mahmood met with Arsenio Dominguez, IMO Secretary-General, to discuss cooperation between Bahrain and the organisation, as well as matters of mutual interest relating to maritime legislation, safety, marine environmental protection, and the development of national capabilities.

The meeting also addressed ways to enhance technical cooperation and capacity-building, continue aligning national legislation with international maritime treaties and conventions, and exchange views on developments in the shipping sector and the transition towards more sustainable practices.

The meeting also witnessed the deposit of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s instrument of accession to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), which addresses the prevention of air pollution and the reduction of emissions from ships.

Al Mahmood affirmed that Bahrain’s accession to Annex VI reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to further developing its maritime framework in line with international conventions and standards, and to supporting efforts to reduce emissions and promote environmental sustainability in the maritime transport sector.
