HE Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, announced an initiative to reengineer Bahrain Post operations through the establishment of an integrated network comprising 50 authorized postal service points and 50 electronic parcel lockers across the Kingdom's governorates.
The announcement came during a press conference held at Manama Post Office to outline the initiative's objectives, implementation phases and role in developing postal services and advancing digital transformation.
The Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications said that the initiative aligns with the ministry's efforts to develop postal services and enhance their efficiency through digital solutions and modern technologies, while strengthening partnerships with the private sector to provide innovative services that meet the needs of individuals and businesses and keep pace with developments in logistics and e-commerce.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed noted that developing postal services is a key priority in improving the quality of services provided to the public and enhancing operational efficiency. The minister affirmed the ministry's commitment to implementing further development initiatives that support digital transformation, enhance Bahrain's competitiveness and contribute to economic development.
For her part, Fatima Abdullah Al Dhaen, Undersecretary for Land Transportation and Post Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, explained that the initiative aims to expand access to postal services by establishing authorized postal service points in cooperation with the private sector.
These points will be located within commercial and service establishments frequented by the public, including supermarkets and retail outlets, enabling customers to access essential postal services near their homes and workplaces.
Al Dhaen noted that the electronic parcel lockers will provide smart and secure solutions for receiving and depositing parcels and postal items, depending on the services available, without requiring direct interaction with postal employees.
She explained that electronic systems and verification procedures will allow customers to use collection codes and electronic notifications, providing greater flexibility and convenience, including access outside official working hours at locations where this service is available.
Al Dhaen said that the initiative will provide additional options for individuals, businesses and e-commerce customers, facilitating the receipt and dispatch of shipments and parcels while improving distribution efficiency and offering alternatives that complement traditional delivery services.
She explained that the electronic locker service had previously undergone a pilot phase involving the operation of 14 electronic parcel lockers at several locations across Bahrain's governorates, including shopping malls.
During the pilot phase, 71% of customers offered different collection options chose electronic lockers. These results supported plans to expand the service into a broader network combining postal service points and electronic lockers.
The initiative will be implemented in phases over six months, according to a defined schedule. The first three months will see the launch of 25 postal service points and 25 electronic parcel lockers, followed by gradual expansion to reach the targeted total of 50 each.
Bahrain Post will oversee the overall service network, while RedBox will manage operational aspects, including the establishment, operation and maintenance of postal service points and electronic lockers.
RedBox will also provide the technological solutions and systems required to manage parcel collection and delivery, alongside electronic customer verification procedures.
Services will be available to citizens, residents, companies and institutions, depending on the services offered at each location and Bahrain Post's approved procedures.
Operations will begin gradually as locations are prepared and approved, with announcements to follow regarding newly operational sites and the services available at each.
