The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Ports and Maritime Affairs plays a pivotal role in regulating, developing, and promoting the ports and maritime industry.

With a vision to develop world-class infrastructure for the maritime and shipping industry, the PMA focuses on ensuring that state-of-the-art, up-to-date facilities, services, and operations are delivered in accordance with international standards. It also oversees marine operations within both public and private ports, providing technical support and advice to port operators. Additionally, it ensures maritime safety by maintaining 100% readiness of aids to navigation leading to the Kingdom’s port approaches.

Ports Affairs: Responsible for overseeing the operations and performance of ports and private jetties, managing the issuance of licenses for port and marine services, and supervising the commercial activities of ports. This includes coordinating with all stakeholders and adopting port standards and recommended practices in line with international standards. Directorates within Port Affairs include:
- Commercial Affairs, Logistics Zones, and Port Development
- Port Operations and Technical Services
- Safety and Security

Maritime Affairs: Responsible for overseeing shipping and maritime activities, including the registration of ships under the Bahraini flag and the issuance of relevant certificates. Maritime Affairs also ensures the adoption and enforcement of international standards and recommended practices as per local legislation and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) guidelines. Directorates within Maritime Affairs include:
- Ship Registry and Seaman Affairs
- Maritime Safety
